The Skeletal and Muscular Systems

The Skeletal System

The group of bones, cartilage, and other tissues and organs.

Cartilage is a strong tissue that is more flexible than bones.
ex. your nose, your ear

This system has five major functions:

1) Provides shape and support
2) Enables you to move
3) Protects your internal organs
4) Produces blood Cells
5) Stores materials

The human body is made up of 206 bones!!!

Two or more bones meet at a joint.  Different joints are found through out the body.  Each joint allows for different movement.

Kind of Joint Where it's found in the body How the joint works
Pivot joint neck The bones rotate around each other
Gliding joint ankle, wrist The bones slide over each other
Hinge joint elbow, knee The bones move like a door hinge, back and forth
Ball-and-socket joint hip, shoulder The bones move in a circle

Joints are held together by a strong connective tissue known as ligaments.

The Muscular System

This system has four major functions:

1)  Keeps your heart beating
2)  Helps with locomotion
3)  Gives the body shape
4)  Protects your organs and bones

There are about 650 muscles in the human body!!!

Voluntary muscles are muscles in which you control the movement where as
Involuntary muscles  are not under your conscious control

There are three types of muscles present in the body:

Skeletal Muscles are muscles that contract to move bones.  These
muscles are voluntary (Tendons are tough cords of connective tissue,
which attach skeletal muscle to bones).

Smooth Muscles are involuntary and are found in the walls of
many of your organs.

Cardiac Muscles are also involuntary and is found only in your heart.
It keeps your heart pumping constantly.

How do the skeletal and muscular systems work together?

The interaction of the skeletal and muscular systems, with the coordination of the nervous system allows accomplishment of locomotion necessary to escape danger, obtain food and shelter, and reproduce.
